The Transportation Research Board (TRB) has placed a recently completed synthesis study on its web site -- NCHRP Synthesis 405, Utility Location and Highway Design. This study explores current practices in use by transportation agencies for consideration of utilities during the project development process, including:
• where in the process the utility impacts are assessed and relocation decisions made;
• what policies, regulations, manuals, and guidelines are used; and
• how design decisions are influenced by utilities.
Jim Anspach was the principal investigator for the study. Oversight and review was provided by a panel consisting of representatives from
FHWA HQ, California DOT, Georgia DOT, New Hampshire DOT, Illinois DOT, Virginia DOT; Texas Transportation Institute, a utility company,
a consulting engineering company, and TRB.
You may want to consider passing this information along to your in-house and consultant designers, or to anyone else you know of that might be interested.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
