President's Message (March 2010)

When I joined APWA in 1991, I was just barely a practicing young professional (PYP). Hind-sight being what it is, I see now what I had missed as an even younger practicing professional. The experience of active membership in APWA or any organization for that matter is an integral part of a younger person’s professional development. Over the last year, emphasis has been placed on the development of our younger members. The sustainability of any organization is totally dependent on the younger rank and file being positioned to move up the ladder and be-come the leaders of the organization. It is our duty as not-so-young practicing professionals (you know who you are) to not only mentor our junior staff in the practice of their profession, but to support involvement in organizations such as APWA. I encourage all you bosses and supervi-sors out there to unchain your junior staff from the computer and get them involved. After all, when those PYPs are running things, their decisions may have a direct impact on you. I am the PYP on the right (circa 1979) and yes, the backdrop is the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Isn’t geologic time wonderful?
Sincerely,
Gary Sheppard
