August for APWA means Conference Month:

I started writing this article just as we were getting ready for our first in-person statewide conference in more than two years. Now that the conference is over with, I can recap a little better, but we will have an entire conference review in September’s newsletter. This year’s conference was amazing!! We had 560 registered attendees, 70 exhibitors, more than 30 speakers, and a lot of fun and networking. The energy and excitement were amazing to experience! If you attended the conference, please help make next year’s even better by completing the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/73MZKJ7

At the end of August, is APWA’s National conference, PWX, in Charlotte, NC. This conference is an amazing opportunity to attend top notch sessions covering all types of public works topics while meeting attendees from around the world. Each year, a different chapter hosts the PWX conference and attendees can visit a different city. Last year’s was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Phoenix hosted this conference in 2015 and the Arizona Chapter Board is currently surveying our members to gauge interest in hosting the conference again in 2027. This would be a tremendous effort with planning, volunteering, and raising funds. The good news is that we have five years to plan and line up sponsors. Additionally, we would be providing an opportunity for so many to attend this National conference that may not be able to otherwise. We would appreciate hearing from you so we can continue evaluating whether or not we should host PWX. Please let us know if you feel we should host the conference; if you would be willing to volunteer, or if you would be willing to contribute through a sponsorship. You may email your comments to: Donna Hancock Donna_Hancock@tempe.gov; or Corey Steele Cory.Steele@strand.com.

Speaking of events, don’t forget that we are getting together August 21st for a Diamondbacks Game. Tickets are only $10!! Register to attend here: http://arizona.apwa.net/EventDetails?id=29488

I hope you are all having a safe summer!

Sincerely,

Sandy Niebel

Committee Updates:

On Thursday, July 9th, the young professional committee held its quarterly luncheon at the Town of Gilbert. Casey Ambrose, from the Town of Gilbert and Chair of National APWA Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, presented to the group. The presentation focused on local and national diversity, equity, and inclusion indicatives in public works.  A free lunch from Jimmy Johns was provided to all attendees. This was the first in-person presentation for the young professionals since the start of COVID and was a success with 10 attendees. The committee is hopeful to continue to grow attendance at future events.
