| Welcome Video: https://youtu.be/9QfN3jz2n48 There are so many exciting things to look forward to as we begin our chapter’s new fiscal year. One that I feel is the most important is that the majority of APWA Arizona events are live and in person! I have always believed that success is determined by how much effort you put into something and APWA is no different. Whether you join APWA for its networking opportunities, to stay abreast of industry news, or associate with your public works peers, showing up and getting involved is the most beneficial approach to success. We are committed to serving you and providing a variety of opportunities throughout the year. As we look at future events, I encourage you to commit to attending them, and to volunteer. You won’t regret the success and satisfaction you receive in return. Here are a few of the events planned in the upcoming months:
The Chapter needs you so now is a great time to get involved! Tell us what you are interested in and how much available time you have, and we will find the perfect fit for you. You can always reach out to the committee chairs directly through this contact page. Speaking of volunteers, I would like to take a moment to thank all of our Board and committee members for their commitment to APWA, their creative energy, and tireless efforts. I sincerely appreciate all of you and how you continue to shape the Arizona Chapter. I am honored to be this year’s President and am here to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and share your ideas to help make us an even better chapter.

Jim Camp Wash Bridge The Jim Camp Wash Bridge #1602 and Cottonwood Wash Bridge #1603 replacement project included the complete demolition and reconstruction of two deteriorating cast-in-place concrete slab bridges that spanned two separate washes on US-180. Both new bridge decks were cast-in-place concrete slabs sup-ported by the original H-pile piers, thus the new decks had to be supported by falsework erected from the beds of both washes. The falsework had to be erected in both washes for months, therefore the Army Corps of Engineers took particular interest in the project. Detailed planning, coordination and partnering took place from the very onset of the project between ADOT and Banicki to implement a falsework protection plan that would channelize wash flow around the falsework elements and through open bridge spans. The Army Corps of Engineers approved the plan and were very pleased with the level of effort and diligence ADOT and Banicki demonstrated with this matter. This two phase project was 200 working days with a contractual start date of April 1, 2020. In order to avoid a winter shutdown and eliminate the risks associated with cold weather construction at a project el-evation of over 5,350 feet, ADOT encouraged Banicki to develop an aggressive single season construc-tion schedule that opened both lanes of traffic in their final configuration within seven months and achieve substantial completion within eight months. Banicki presented this accelerated construction schedule to ADOT during the Project Partnering Workshop in March of 2020, to which ADOT pledged to work hand in hand with Banicki to complete the project before winter for the benefit of the traveling public and to avoid a potential winter shutdown. All bridge construction and new paving was complete by the end of September in less than six months, allowing both lanes of traffic to be opened in their final configuration in mid-October. The project received substantial completion on November 27, 2020, a tremendous accomplishment which speaks to the ex-ceptional partnership between ADOT and Banicki to enable all construction be performed to the utmost quality without any delays.
