Navigating Accessible Pedestrian Route Compliance
Susan M. Duncan, R.N., Accessibility Specialist
The ABCs of Accessibility Inc.

It is safe to say agencies and practitioners face daily challenges in meeting ADA compliance and user expectations. Nearly 27 years after the passage of the ADA, we see disconnect between project engineers and agency’s in applying accessible pedestrian facility design standards, guidelines, and applicable technical assistance resources. The disconnect “why” often seems to be a need to clarify which Federal, state and local reference document(s) to be applied to the project scope. Our discussion today will provide an overview of some navigational tools to support the design and construction of accessible pedestrian routes in the public right-of-way, and an update on the U.S. Access Board Draft Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG).
