APWA June 21 2017 Luncheon

Description :

Navigating Accessible Pedestrian Route Compliance
Susan M. Duncan, R.N., Accessibility Specialist
The ABCs of Accessibility Inc.

It is safe to say agencies and practitioners face daily challenges in meeting ADA compliance and user expectations. Nearly 27 years after the passage of the ADA, we see disconnect between project engineers and agency’s in applying accessible pedestrian facility design standards, guidelines, and applicable technical assistance resources. The disconnect “why” often seems to be a need to clarify which Federal, state and local reference document(s) to be applied to the project scope. Our discussion today will provide an overview of some navigational tools to support the design and construction of accessible pedestrian routes in the public right-of-way, and an update on the U.S. Access Board Draft Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG).

Susan M. Duncan, R.N., Accessibility Specialist is founder and principal of The ABCs of Accessibility® inc., established in 1978, which is a solution driven consulting firm dedicated to providing proactive accessible and universal design services.  She brings over 35 years of in-depth accessibility knowledge including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the Proposed Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way, (PROWAG) 2013, as well as universal design best practices. She is an experienced project manager who can both evaluate and advise public and private sectors on a broad range of ADA compliance issues and practices as well as physical barriers in buildings, sites and public right-of-way facilities. Susan has presented hundreds of dynamic hands-on ADA trainings, and recently completed the development of a design manual chapter for the NMDOT on pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way.
